Adding a lastmod date tells Google when pages were last updated. Only use "Today" if you're actually updating your site today — otherwise leave it out.
Where to put your sitemap.xml
Upload sitemap.xml to the root of your domain — it must be accessible at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Then submit the URL in Google Search Console under Indexing → Sitemaps. Also add a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt. See the Google Search Console guide.
What pages to include
Include every page you want Google to index: homepage, service pages, location pages, blog posts, about, contact. Exclude: admin pages, thank-you pages, login pages, duplicate content URLs, and any page with a noindex meta tag. See the robots.txt guide for the crawling side.
Does sitemap priority affect rankings?
Priority is a hint to crawlers about relative importance within your own site — not a ranking signal Google uses to rank you against other sites. Setting every page to 1.0 doesn't help; it makes the signal meaningless. Use 1.0 for your homepage, 0.8 for key pages, 0.7 for blog posts.
Sitemap size limits
A single sitemap.xml file can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must be under 50MB uncompressed. If your site exceeds this, use a sitemap index file that references multiple sitemaps. For most small business sites (under 200 pages), a single sitemap is all you need.
