Getting ranked on Google is one thing. Getting cited by AI is different — and most businesses have no idea where to start.

When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best web designer for small businesses" or asks Perplexity "how do I do SEO for my restaurant", an AI reads dozens of pages and quotes the best one. That quote — with your name and link attached — is an AI citation. It's the new version of ranking number one.

The difference: in traditional search, ten results compete. In AI search, usually only one or two sources get cited. The gap between being cited and not being cited is absolute.

Here's exactly how to get to the cited side.

How AI Engines Decide What to Cite

Before the tactics, the model: AI engines don't rank pages the way Google does. They extract information from pages they trust and synthesise an answer. The page that gets cited is the one that was easiest to extract from and had the highest trust signal.

Three things drive that decision:

  • Clarity — does the page answer the question directly, or does it make the AI work to find the answer?
  • Structure — is the content organised in a way an AI can parse? (Schema markup, headings, explicit answers)
  • Authority — does the wider web treat this source as credible? (Links, mentions, domain trust)

Google AI Overviews also heavily weight your existing Google rankings — traditional SEO feeds directly into AEO performance here. ChatGPT and Perplexity care less about rankings and more about content quality and extractability.

Core principle: AI cites the page that makes answering easiest. Your job is to be that page.

Step 1: Answer Questions Directly — at the Top

The single highest-impact change you can make is this: put the direct answer in the first sentence of each section.

Most pages bury their answers. Three paragraphs of context, two disclaimers, and then the answer. AI systems extract the clearest, most direct response — not the most qualified one.

Rewrite your section intros so they lead with the answer. If the section is "How long does SEO take?", the first sentence should be "SEO typically takes 3–6 months to show meaningful results." Everything after can expand on that.

Also rewrite your H2 and H3 headings as literal questions where relevant: "How do I add schema markup?" outperforms "Schema Markup" as a heading for AEO purposes.

Step 2: Add FAQ Schema to Your Key Pages

FAQ schema is the most underused AEO lever. It tells AI systems: this page has questions and answers, formatted explicitly for extraction.

Every service page on your site should have 3–5 FAQs at the bottom with proper FAQPage schema markup in your <head>. The questions should be exactly what a potential customer would type or ask an AI assistant.

A plumber's site should have FAQ schema answering "how much does it cost to fix a leaking pipe?", "how long does a boiler installation take?", and "do you offer emergency callouts?" — because those are the questions people are asking AI engines right now.

You can verify your schema is working using Google's Rich Results Test (search for it on Google). A passing result means AI engines can read your structured data.

Step 3: Add Article Schema to Every Blog Post

Article schema signals to AI: this is a piece of writing by a named, credible author, published on a specific date. It turns a page into a citable source.

Every blog post should include Article schema with at minimum: headline, description, author (with name and URL), datePublished, and dateModified. This is a 15-minute fix per post and has an outsized effect on AI extractability.

Step 4: Be Explicit About Who You Are (Entity Clarity)

AI systems need to know what entity your site represents before they'll cite it for entity-specific queries.

"We help businesses grow" is not entity clear. "Bisyri is a freelance web designer and AEO specialist working with travel, hospitality, and e-commerce businesses in Europe and Southeast Asia" is entity clear.

Your homepage and About page should state explicitly:

  • Your name or business name
  • What you specifically do (not vague brand language)
  • Who you serve
  • Where you operate

Add Person or Organization schema to your homepage to make this machine-readable. This is the foundation everything else builds on — AI can't cite a source it can't identify.

Step 5: Build Topical Authority in Your Niche

One article does not make you an authority. Five articles on the same topic cluster does.

AI engines — especially ChatGPT and Perplexity — favour sources that clearly specialise in the domain being queried. A site with one article about AEO will lose to a site with six, every time, even if the single article is better written.

Pick your core topic cluster (AEO, local SEO, e-commerce web design — whatever matches your services) and publish consistently within it. Three to five pieces on the same subject establishes you as the subject expert in AI's model of the world.

The compounding effect: More content on a topic → more AI citations for that topic → more trust signals → even more citations. It builds on itself.

Step 6: Earn Real-World Citations and Links

Traditional authority signals — backlinks, directory listings, press mentions, guest posts — still matter for AEO, especially for Google AI Overviews.

AI systems learn what sources are trustworthy partly from how the rest of the web treats them. A site with links from credible sources is treated as more citable than an equally well-structured site with none.

You don't need hundreds of links. Even a handful of genuine citations from relevant, trusted sources meaningfully improves your AEO standing. Focus on quality over volume: one mention in an industry publication outweighs fifty low-quality directory submissions.

How to Check If It's Working

Testing AI citation performance is less systematic than checking Google rankings, but these methods work:

  • Manual testing — Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the core questions in your niche. See who gets cited. Do this weekly to track progress.
  • Ask about your business directly — Type "who is [your business name] and what do they do?" into ChatGPT. If AI can describe you accurately, your entity clarity is working.
  • Google Search Console — AI Overviews impressions are now appearing for some accounts. Check your Performance report for "AI Overviews" appearances.
  • AEO Readiness Checker — Take the free AEO check to score your current readiness across the core factors.

How Long Does It Take?

Schema markup and content restructuring: pages can be re-indexed within days of changes. Initial AI citations typically start appearing 2–8 weeks after strong schema and direct-answer content are in place. Consistent, reliable citations across multiple queries take 2–6 months of sustained effort.

The businesses that start now are building a head start the rest of the market won't be able to close quickly. Most competitors aren't doing this yet. That window won't stay open.

Where to Start Today

If you do one thing after reading this: pick your most important service page and rewrite the first sentence of each section to lead directly with the answer. Then add 3–5 FAQs at the bottom with FAQ schema. That alone puts you ahead of 90% of sites in your niche.

From there: Article schema on every blog post, entity clarity on your homepage, and one new piece of content per week in your core topic cluster.

That's the full playbook. The businesses that execute it consistently will own their niche in AI search by the end of 2026.
